It is a great story, and our Brussels bureau is already formidable, with Steve Erlanger, our chief European diplomatic correspondent, and Matt Apuzzo, our international investigative reporter. ![]() It is an amazing moment to be covering the European Union, which is now caught between the escalating trade war between the United States and China, which is emerging as the world’s most powerful regulator of the tech industry, and which is under siege from within, as populism surges across the bloc. She has an undergraduate degree from Oxford and holds a master’s of public administration in public policy from the London School of Economics. Matina was born and raised in Athens, Greece. She had a penchant for breaking news, and scoops, out of the European Union and is fluent in the byways of the bloc’s bureaucracy - even as she didn’t hesitate to jump into on-the-ground coverage of Europe’s migrant crisis. So we are very excited to announce that Matina will be joining The Times as our next Brussels correspondent.įor the past five years, Matina has been based in Nairobi, reporting on the scramble for influence in the Horn of Africa, South Sudan’s civil war and Ethiopia’s bumpy rise to regional hegemony.īefore Nairobi, Matina worked in Brussels and roamed Europe in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
